About Spider Bites

By Cory Schuett, 01 Mar 20:58

This article explains the symptoms of spider bites and what to do if bitten.

There are only two spiders in the contiguous United States that do harm to humans: the black widow spider and the brown recluse spider.

They are more common in the South, as they prefer warmer weather. These spiders prefer and dark, dry places, such as closets, woodpiles and under
sinks.

A bite from a female black widow is hardly ever lethal, but it is the more dangerous of the two. It can be recognized by a red hourglass shape on its body.

The bite does not hurt a lot; you may not even realize that anything happened. The initial feeling may be minor swelling and light red marks. After a few hours, you may start feeling strong pain and stiffness.

Other signs and symptoms of a black widow spider bite include severe abdominal pain, chills and a fever.

The brown recluse spider can recognized by a violin-shaped marking. Its bite will initially cause some stinging, but after about eight hours redness and intense pain will follow. A blister forms near the bite mark and leaves a deep sore.

Reactions from the bite include a minor fever and rash to nausea and fatigue. Death is a very uncommon result, but more often occurring with children.

If a spider bites you, clean the bite mark well with soap and water and use a cool compress. Aspirin can reduce minor symptoms in adults but should not be given to children - acetaminophen should, though.

Identify the type of spider that bit you, if possible. If the bite is on an arm or leg, tie a tight (but not too tight) bandage above the area to slow the venom's spread. Apply a cold cloth to the area.

You can't be too careful, so if any strong symptoms occur, see a doctor. If a child under six years old is bitten, or an adult experiences extreme reactions, he or she may need treatment in a medical facility.
