White Powder On A Sparkling Street Of Addiction

By Admin Editor, 12 Feb 12:50

Cocaine has held the position as the drug, or drug addiction, of choice for upper class society for years. It was portrayed in movies before they were in color, was used to alleviate the stress of going without alcohol during the prohibition, and was the addictive ingredient in Coca-cola.

Cocaine has become the second most used drug in the United States and the staple party drug for the American college student. Even with the knowledge of its dangerous side effects and highly addictive nature, it is still regarded as the drug that must be attempted at least once, and ultimately becomes a harsh drug rehab program filled with pain and suffering.

Sadly, the cause of this is found in the media where behind the scenes parties are held with trays of the white powder being handed around and the big screen portrays successful individuals running to the restroom for a quick “sniff break.” Indeed, Hollywood has created the requirement for actors not only to play the role of substance abuser, but also to hold a drug addiction themselves.

This results in actors who drive in the middle of the night with cars filled with alcohol and usable amounts of the stimulant, run into barbershops to cut off all of their hair, or are found in their hotel tub without a pulse. While these are all cause for immediate action, the stories we follow on screen still portray drug intervention in a negative light. While a reform of massive proportion would correct the troubles we’re witnessing, a simpler start would be to introduce our powder-sniffing, chemical-abusing, cocaine user to proper drug addiction therapy.

The illusionary view of Hollywood portrays a scene where actors roam the streets, dressed to the nines, while cinematographers and paparazzi are hurriedly running around trying to take make movies and take pictures. When the actor feels a little run down, they simply pull out a small container, dip a finger into some unknown substance and then smell that finger. Everyone sees it and no one pays any mind; it’s the same as every other actor and a little drug addiction never hurt anyone.

The truth is Hollywood has fallen to disarray and disuse. The buildings that were once the Mecca of western cinematic film are now the sweatshops of the movie industry; the magic happens everywhere else. Either the actors running around are there for publicity stunts or they’re young aspiring stars with no claim to fame. In the end, the illusion is merely a reflection in a warped mirror, and the actor taking his little pick me up is headed down a very dangerous road that leads straight to drug rehab.

If one were to follow the tabloids, they would assume that every celebrity who enters a drug and alcohol treatment center is simply doing it for the publicity and has no true intentions of staying. While there are a number of stars who have helped shape this fantasy, there are an equal number who have found proper treatment and have moved on to live more fulfilling lives. The tabloids rarely report this good news, instead focusing on the misery of the next icon, hoping to drive up profits and adding another layer to this false impression.

Robert Downey Jr. is still a favorite amongst the press for his years of substance abuse and poor behavior, yet he’s been clean and sober for half a decade. While he may have gone through drug rehab multiple times, he eventually found the will to strive forward and regain control of his life. This part of his story is relatively well hidden in comparison to the articles about his gallivanting around during his addiction days, but then bad news sells and good news is used as filler.

The options for Hollywood celebrities to enter a drug rehab program are nearly endless, but until they see the damage that their actions are causing and understand that they must want the help, they will never succeed in substance abuse treatment. The truth of the matter lies in the resolve of the individual: if there is desire to change the direction one’s life is headed, then there is hope for that individual to make corrections. However, if along this path, they falter even a little, they hold a great chance to become one of the lost souls, who’s every waking moment is a tormented dream of a life they once held dear.
